Variety reports that “Insecure” creator and star Issa Rae has joined the upcoming social political coming of age drama “The Hate You Give” based on Angela Thomas’ debut novel of the same name.
The novel tells the story of 16-year-old Starr Carter who after recently moving from her poverty stricken hometown to the suburbs, witnesses her childhood friend gun downed unarmed by a police officer. Greif struck she tries to confront the injustice but finds herself conflicted by the two worlds she occupies.
Issa Rae plays the activist who mentors Starr and teaches her to find her voice.
Rae rounds out the cast consisting of Amanda Stenberg, Regina Hall, Russell Hornsby, Algee Smith, Lamar Johnson, and Common.
The books were published earlier this year on February 28th and spent 22 weeks on the New York Times, young adult best sellers list.
This just jumped to one of my most anticipated upcoming movies lists. This is a very interesting and timely take on the coming of age genre, which has gotten tired and repetitive, this will undoubtedly shake things up.
