Yesterday it was announced that “The Hangover” director Todd Phillips is helming and co-writing a stand alone Joker origin story, which will see “Wolf of Wall Street” director Martin Scorsese producing the picture.

The report was that this movie will be its own separate film distant from the current DC Extended Universe, and will launch the film divisions own sub-brand of Elseworlds movies, which will exist in their own continuity.

Now, THR is reporting that “Crazy, Stupid, Love” directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa will be writing and directing a Joker & Harley Quinn solo film. It is being touted as a “criminal love story”. It was reported that Jared Leto will reprise his role as Joker in both Suicide Squad 2 and Gotham City Sirens, so clearly the rumor of Warner Bros and DC trying to cast him out of the role is now debunked.

This is big news on multiple fronts, first off, the idea that a Joker origin story will be produced by Martin Scorsese is both really f***** weird and excited, because it leads the door open to DC to be more experimental.

Secondly, if this Joker/Harley movie is an adaption of Mad Love, the famous origin of Harley Quinn and how she became to fall in love with Joker, I think these guys can deliver the goods.

Reports are coming in that Warner Bros and DC Comics are coming away from the standard shared universe formula are just creating a place for stand alone adaptions of their characters, which I think is the best way to go.

If you look at Marvel and DC together, Marvel has always been one for if you will excuse the phrase “Continuity porn”, they have been a champion of shared environments, I mean most of their heroes operate in New York so they don’t really have a choice.

DC Comics, on the other hand, their characters primarily operate in their own environments and only cross over and come together for world shattering and needless events like Crisis on Infinite Earths. So the idea that DC is returning to this form, is something that I can get behind.

Of course, that’s just my take on it, here’s to see how it plays out as this story progresses.
