I woke up today to a copious amount of Star Wars news. Entertainment Weekly (EW) just posted some more info about the up comic Star Wars film. Including 12 new photos, the most interesting news from this article was some new information on the backstory for the films main villain, Kylo Ren.
Some details learned about the villain was that he’s origins are similar to Luke Skywalker in that he was a young boy from nothing who grew up to be feared and powerful, director JJ Abrams revealed that the name Kylo Ren steams from a group the character join early in his quest called the Knights of Ren, further details about the group will be dispelled in the movie.
This make for an interesting parallel I think that, the main villain and our hero Luke share similar paths and that how Kylo is reflection of Luke in a cracked mirror, which to makes this character interesting as he is sort of the “anti” Luke Skywalker in some ways.
Further more, the article constantly references Kylo Ren’s character as being “Darth Vader obsessed” while JJ further adds to that notion claiming that “The movie explains the origins of the mask and where it’s from, but the design was meant to be a nod to the Vader mask,” Abrams tells EW. “[Ren] is well aware of what’s come before, and that’s very much a part of the story of the film.”
JJ also confirms that Kylo Ren’s light-saber was indeed crafted by his own hand. Which is said to be the final and crucial step one takes when they become a Jedi, is to fashion their own light saber.
Also the article explored the reason as to why JJ Abrams finally accepted the offer to jump start a new Star Wars, and lead us into this new age, the main reason of which was two explore the character of Luke Skywalker and definitely answer the question “Who is Luke Skywalker?” The article also revealed that Han Solo (Harrison Ford) will indeed be a main character in the film and will share a lot of screen time with the new leads of this trilogy Fin (John Boyega), Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Poe Dameron (Oscar Issac) along with their new companion BB 8.
A lot of this news has me excited and curious to see how the new film plays out, it’s undoubtedly one of my most anticipated to see so far this year and I welcome any official knowledge that the studio and crew behind the film can offer and tease us with.
