According to Deadline, Furious 7 director James Wan has closed a deal to direct the upcoming live action film of Aqauman. James Wan who is mostly known for directing such horror films as Saw, and The Conjuring made new waves when he took over the Fast and furious franchise and directed Furious 7 to both critical acclaim and commercial success, making the it the fourth highest grossing film of all time.
“The Aquaman film will be a major tentpole picture for us and James’s span of work has proven him able to take on any manner of project, bringing his incredible creative talent and unique voice to the material,” said Warner Bros’ Greg Silverman in an announcement.
Wan is a very interesting choice indeed, he’s certainly proven that he can handle big budget spectacle with Furious 7, but can also handle emotional turmoil and suspense with The Conjuring and hopefully he can find a happy marriage of the two when dealing with the King of Atlantis.
Adding James Wan on makes me wonder about the style and tone of the film though, I’ve always felt that a live action Aqauman film should feel short of like a Indiana Jones type of the movie. Clearly though, given the direction of the DC Shared Universe, the dark and real tone seems to be all the rage for them. Which I hope Wan can adapt to very nicely.
Aqauman will be released July 28th, and will be directed by James Wan and written by Kurt Johnstad and starring Jason Mamoa.
